Excerpt from the winning work of nonfiction (“Vortex Instructions” was first published in Paradigm):

Calvin Mills is the host of the Raymond Carver Podcast. His short fiction collection, The Caged Man, is forthcoming from Cornerstone Press (2025). His chapbook of creative nonfiction essays, A Handful of Tragic Days, won the Eggtooth Editions Chapbook contest 2023 and is forthcoming. His work has appeared in Short Story, Weird Tales, Tales from the South, Short Form Creative Writing: A Writer’s Guide and Anthology from Bloomsbury, and Youth Culture and Social Change: Making a Difference by Making a Noise from Palgrave MacMillian. His writing awards include a Meritorious Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival as a playwright for Freak Like Me: The Musical. He teaches writing at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Washington.
